Yvonne Morgan: Why I Write Children’s Books

by | Jan 27, 2025 | Blog, New Book | 24 comments

Yvonne Morgan’s mission trips continue to impact her. I’m delighted to have her share with us about her new children’s book and why she writes children’s books.

Why I Write Children’s Books

As my grandchildren grew, I started writing children’s books. I wanted them to read engaging, faith-based stories filled with fun illustrations and valuable lessons that would nurture their faith. As the children grew, I wanted to continue their lessons, tailoring them to their expanding interests and abilities. The book, Mary the Missionary, A Kenyan Adventure, shares the message of God’s love, and how we are all his children despite our differences.

I’ve noticed a significant gap in information regarding the experiences of Christians in other countries and the efforts of their churches to spread the Gospel; this lack of perspective concerns me. After over twenty years of short-term missions, I felt inspired to share my experiences of other cultures through a children’s book, so I created Mary. The spotlight shone on Mary as she bravely became the leading lady of these exciting adventures.

Mary the Missionary Details:

Are you ready for an adventure in Kenya? After singing “Jesus Loves the Little Children” in Sunday School, Mary has many questions about children in other countries. When her parents learn about a mission trip to Kenya, they decided to experience another culture as a family. Mary encounters many trials on her Kenyan adventure. In the end, she learns that she and her new friends aren’t different, and Jesus loves all children.

Through colorful illustrations and engaging storytelling, “Mary the Missionary” teaches important lessons about acceptance, empathy, and love. As Mary meets children from different cultures and backgrounds, she learns to see the world through their eyes and understand the unique challenges they face. Along the way, she also discovers the unifying power of faith and how it transcends all barriers.

The Mission Influence:

The memories of my mission trips to Kenya, filled with the warmth of the people and the beauty of the landscape, led me to choose it for Mary’s visit. I loved the vibrant tapestry of cultures and the welcoming smiles of the people I met during my visits. To help your children explore Kenya, I’ve added free resources to my website; these include downloadable activity books and captivating information. Here is a link to those resources: https://yvonne-morgan.com/mary-the-missionary-resources.

Will Mary Become a Series?

After finishing the book, I’m considering expanding it into a series following Mary’s adventures, assisting her parents on short-term mission trips to various countries, each location providing unique cultural experiences and challenges. But where should Mary go next? I seek God’s guidance, my prayer a silent plea for illumination on the path ahead. Considering my travels, some options include the majestic mountains of Nepal, the vibrant culture of India, or the stunning landscapes of Argentina. A worthwhile alternative is sending Mary to Israel, where she can explore the historical sites and deepen her understanding of our faith’s origins. The variety of alternatives seemed endless. I value your perspective and would appreciate your opinion.

Please join me in prayer for God’s success with the launch of this book.

Almighty God. The book detailing Mary’s adventures, its pages filled with colorful illustrations, is rightfully yours. Help its message reach the people who need to hear it, ensuring it impacts those most in need. May blessings rain down on those who spread the word about this book, sharing its joy with loved ones and friends. I seek your guidance in aligning my words to express your message to the world. Thank you for your unwavering faithfulness as we step out in faith, trusting in the unseen hand that guides us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Flannery O’ Connor said, “When a book leaves your hands, it belongs to God. He may use it to save a few souls or to try a few others, but I think that for the writer to worry is to take over God’s business.”

Blessings,

    Dear Yvonne,
I am thankful, after reading your post on Debbie Wilson’s blog today, that you are challenging Christians around the world through your children’s books to share the Gospel to others where they live and beyond. My first thought (on your comment that you are concerned with these Christians’ perspective) is that in many parts of the world these Christians are persecuted even unto death and maybe many if not most are afraid to share the Gospel. But I am so grateful to hear through ” The Voice of the Martyrs” and missionaries I’ve listened to that gave personal accounts of the great work God is doing through their efforts in their particular localities. So many are being saved and becoming disciples of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I will pray that your book will touch hearts and lives wherever it is read. I hope to purchase a copy but my finances are limited.
