A mother of young children, who also runs a business, told me that since COVID she’s added homeschooling to her already packed schedule. “I don’t know if I’m coming or going,” she said, indicating how distracted she is. Another parent expressed concern and frustration over the choices his adult daughter is making.

Our family includes two standard poodles. They’re playful, affectionate, and smart. When they were young, they also loved to romp in the mud.
A photo of Max and Cosette standing at my French doors with topknots flattened by rain and mud up to their necks reminds me of this stage. They couldn’t understand why I didn’t swing open the door to welcome them inside when they were so pleased with themselves.
Of course, you know why I didn’t let them in. Muddy dogs—even dearly loved ones—contaminate all they touch.
I don’t know why young poodles are drawn to mud. Neither do I understand why I’m drawn to fear and worry. Attraction to bad news must be universal because that’s what news programs cover. It should be called the 6 o’clock bad news!Continue Reading
I grew up with Sunday Blue Laws. Most stores and businesses closed, and construction work ceased on Sundays so the American workforce could rest. Slowly, Sunday became like every other day. Stores opened, kid’s sports teams competed, and families were drawn hither and yon. Today some malls issue hefty fines to stores that won’t open on Sundays.
Then came COVID-19. Businesses and playgrounds stilled, not for one day, but for months on end. Reviewing the Lord’s commandments on taking a Sabbath rest, I thought of the quarantine and wondered if God allowed the shut-down to get us off of the hamster wheel. The connection between rest, faith, and holiness struck me anew.Continue Reading
