I don’t remember an election where I questioned whether or not to vote. This year I’ve wondered. If you are a Christian who has thought about not voting or throwing your vote to someone besides the two central candidates, I understand. But let me tell you why I’ll be voting this November.

A Wake-up Call from Paris

BOOM! Ba-ba-ba-boom! Pop. Pop. Pop.

At six o’clock on Saturday morning, loud noises shook my husband and me out of a deep sleep. The night before we’d watched the tragic news about the terrorist attacks in Paris. In my half awake state my mind tried to understand. Could this be related? We were visiting a small coastal town in North Carolina. Yesterday’s events in Europe couldn’t be related to this, could they?

Gunfire continued in spurts throughout the morning. My husband called the local police to ask about it? We learned that the house-shaking booms were Marines practicing at near by Camp Lejeune. The smaller pops hailed the opening of duck and deer season. After the events of the previous day, I didn’t object to being awakened by our Marines.

At breakfast I remarked how sad I felt about what happened in Paris. Larry picked up his phone, “Siri, how many abortions were there in the USA last year?”

Timeless Principles on How to Vote

From presidents to propositions, campaign ads and debates can confuse us. When there are many opinions on how to govern, how do we know how to vote? My philosophy has been to pray for wisdom, learn what I can, and go with what I know. One thing I know is God’s Word contains timeless principles. That means His wisdom is relevant to our time.

Consider the following:

The sanctity of human life from birth to the grave:

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

“Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.” Genesis 9:6

Valuing Every Life

What can compare with the miracle of a new baby? Holding your child for the first time creates an incomparable bond. I remember being surprised by the fierce protective love I felt for this little person I hardly knew.

Imagine holding your new son knowing that your king had commanded the destruction of all baby boys from your race. The Hebrews in ancient Egypt faced this when Pharaoh commanded the Egyptians to toss the Hebrew male infants to the crocodiles (Exodus 1:22 NIV). I wonder if he remembered all the baby boys he had ordered killed when the tenth plague took his own son? Did a child’s life suddenly become precious?
